Coffins and Caskets

The presence of a coffin or casket at a funeral can help with the grieving process, as people come to terms with the reality of the death. Choosing between a coffin or casket is often a matter of personal preference, and our team is here to help guide and support you through the process.

Coffins

With six sides, a coffin is tapered from the head to the foot. A coffin lid is in one piece and can be removed for viewing, or some have more of a flat lid, which allows memorabilia to be placed on them during a funeral.

Coffins come in various styles, with some including decorative elements and others being more environmentally friendly. When opting for a funeral with cremation, families often choose a basic coffin. On the other hand, for in-ground burials, families may seek coffins with a sturdier construction and materials for greater longevity. In the case of above-ground burials, a zinc liner is required, making a solid timber hardwood coffin the recommended choice.

Traditionally, coffin materials and hardware, are simpler, being primarily made of wood. However, modern options and eco-friendly materials are also available, providing a broad range of choices to suit different budgets, personal taste, and values.

Caskets

The primary difference between a casket and a coffin is in their design. Caskets have a rectangular shape, typically being bulkier and heavier compared to coffins. Their lid is sometimes split into two pieces, hinged separately, allowing the top section to be open for viewing, while the lower part remains closed.

Caskets are known for their more ornate appearance, perhaps featuring decorative hardware, and metalwork, sometimes featuring long bar handles. Caskets are sometimes made from a wider range of materials, including wood, metal, and other modern options.

Consider your options when choosing between a coffin or casket and when arranging, please speak to our supportive team members about availability. On occasion, a preferred design may not have the required dimensions.
